You never really know what to expect with the Super Furry Animals. With nine previous full length albums, Welsh band the Super Furry Animals have quite the reputation behind them. With a kinky sense of humor, constant experiments with extra instrumentation, and unswerving funkadelic pop sound, whatever the SFA churns out is usually sure to at least keep your attention! The SFA’s last two albums they have released have had a much slower feel to them, but Dark Days Light Years goes back to their more playful roots.

Dark Days Light Years is very dance-worthy, and instead of being very structured, like their last album Hey Venus!, Dark Days Light Years has a much more relaxed, capricious, and even silly feel to it! As usual, the Super Furry Animals employ a broad range of instruments and styles. Instead of having a unifying theme or mood overall, the album skips around, offering your crazy dance themes, perfect pop anthems, slower ballads, and even a folk song! Some people have said that the album is simply a hodgepodge of tracks, but others have described it as a really great collection of singles. SFA is giving us a different way to look at the idea of an album. As usual, they refuse to limit themselves, delving into almost every style imaginable.

The album begins with the song Crazy Naked Girls, a psychedelic acid trip that utilizes the whammy bar as thoroughly as possible. The song’s mammoth riffs lead straight into the track Mt., which is a interesting mix of glam and folk styles; the song is basically what happens when David Bowie meets John Denver. Ever creative, the Super Furry Animals employ the use of an erhu in the song. An ehru is a two-stringed Chinese instrument that you play with a bow.

SFA is always surprising their fans in a great way. They have tracks that are purely pop and even ones that convey the feeling of skiing in neon ski bibs in the late eighties in Switzerland. It is crazy and wonderful how well rounded and exciting this band is.

Dark Days Light Years is definitely the most groove oriented album that the SFA has released in years, and provides a much needed burst of impish humor and playfulness to anyone’s playlist. So instead of listening to self absorbed artists who take their work far too seriously and whose songs are a result of overthinking and overproduction, take a relaxing acid trip with the Super Furry Animals!
